I'm glad I read this author's Shades of Magic series first, because I would have got a bad first impression of her writing if I had started with this one. It starts out with telling, laundry list descriptions, all the earmarks of a 3 star at best author.
I didn't like the way it jumped back and forth between two time periods either, but I can see why it was done that way. Slowly, the reasons why Victor feels as he does towards Eli and just how strong those feelings are get revealed.
Despite my complaints, I got caught up in the story and decided it was definitely worth continuing. The time jumps nearly lost me about 2/3 through out of frustration, but I had to know what happened. When that happens, I have to give it at least 3 stars.
The final chapters got more linear and were riveting, so despite having a love/hate relationship with this story, it's possible I might read the sequel. Hopefully it won't have the constant flashbacks! based on where this one finished, I think it won't need to.
